North Carolina’s early Canada goose season is a favorite among waterfowl hunters, and 2025 is no exception. Running from September 1 through September 30, this season offers a unique opportunity for hunters in the area west of U.S. Highway 17 to target resident geese under more liberal regulations than later in the year.

📍 Location & Timing

The season is open only in areas west of U.S. Highway 17, which cuts through the eastern part of the state. This restriction helps manage goose populations where they’re most abundant while protecting migratory birds that haven’t yet arrived in coastal zones.

Hunting is permitted from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset, giving hunters ample time to scout, set up, and pursue geese throughout the day.

🔫 Gear & Regulations

One of the most notable aspects of the September season is the relaxed gear restrictions:

  • No shotgun plug is required, meaning hunters can load more than three shells if their firearm allows it.
  • Electronic calls are permitted, but only during the month of September. These devices can be highly effective in attracting geese, especially in open fields or large water bodies where visibility is key.
  • Non-toxic shot is required, either steel or other approved non-toxic material. Don’t ever have lead shot in your possession while hunting waterfowl. In addition, since mourning dove season overlaps Canada Goose season, DO NOT take a shot at geese during your dove hunt unless you only have non-toxic shot!

These allowances are designed to help control the growing population of resident Canada geese, which can cause agricultural damage and pose risks in urban areas.

🎯 Bag Limits & Strategy

The daily bag limit is an impressive 15 birds per hunter, reflecting the state’s goal of reducing resident goose numbers. With such a generous limit, hunters should focus on scouting feeding areas, roosting sites, and flight paths to maximize success.

Early season geese can be wary, but they’re also predictable. Look for freshly harvested fields, grassy pastures, and water sources where geese congregate. Decoy spreads and blinds should be set up with concealment in mind, especially as birds become more cautious later in the month.

📝 Final Thoughts

North Carolina’s September Canada goose season is a golden window for hunters to enjoy fast-paced action and high bag limits. With relaxed gear rules and extended hunting hours, it’s a prime time to sharpen your skills and help manage the local goose population. Just be sure to stay west of Highway 17, follow all licensing requirements, and enjoy one of the most exciting waterfowl seasons the state has to offer.
