As we approach the 2026 spring turkey season, the landscape for hunting in North Carolina presents a unique blend of abundant opportunities and significant challenges. While our deer herds are thriving—estimated at over 1 to 1.1 million animals statewide—the elusive Eastern Wild Turkey population sits at around 270,000. With a solid, yet challenging population, finding productive, unpressured land is crucial for a successful season.
Scouting Report: The Reality of the Woods
A recent scouting trip highlighted the reality of finding success on new ground. Walking over 6 miles in a newly designated area yielded only one set of tom tracks. While finding any sign is a success when navigating unfamiliar territory, it serves as a reminder that these birds are scattered and demand deep scouting effort to locate a “huntable” bird.
FLOC 2026 Turkey Program Intentions
To address these challenges and foster the next generation of conservationists, the Fall Line Outdoors Chapter (FLOC) has established the following operational intentions for the 2026 Turkey Hunting Program:
- Selection of Candidates: Select 10 candidates or students (adults 18+) for the program no later than (NLT) February 4th. Applications can be found in the falllineoutdoors.com website.
- Range Day Preparation: Conduct a mandatory range day at the Fort Bragg Gun Club (McKellar’s Lodge) from 1100 to 4:00 PM (or until complete) to ensure weapon familiarization, proficiency and target paterning. Note: The range closes at 4:00 PM.
- Mentorship and Scouting: Pair new hunters with experienced mentors for 2 pre-season scouting days and, subsequently, a guided hunt during the NC spring season (April 11 – May 9, 2026).
Setting the Stage for Success
With the NC Wildlife Resources Commission confirming that turkey numbers have stabilized, the goal for FLOC is to provide mentorship that focuses on ethical hunting and habitat understanding. By focusing on proper, pre-season scouting, we hope to improve the odds, turning those scattered, hard-to-find tracks into a memorable 2026 season.
