It is never too late to learn how to fish. Freshwater fishing gives you a calm, confidence‑building way to reset your mind, develop a repeatable skill that puts food on the table when you need it, and helps keep you deeply connected to the outdoors.
Grab Essential Gear
You do not need expensive equipment to catch your first fish. Bring this equipment to your class, or let us know you need to borrow:
- Rod and Reel: Buy a pre-spooled, medium action spinfishing combo.
- Terminal Tackle: Get size 6 bait hooks, clip-on bobbers, and split-shot weights.
- Live Bait: Live earthworms or nightcrawlers attract almost any freshwater species.
Stay Legal and Safe
Before you come:
- Purchase a NC fishing or comprehensive license online via NCwildlife.gov.
- Read the local regulations for daily catch limits.
- Gather your equipment or let us know you need to borrow some
- Pack sunscreen, insect repellent, bottled water/snacks, and a pair of sunglasses.
- Dress for the weather, Wear closed-toed shoes.
Find a Beginner Spot
After attending our event you can look for local ponds, small lakes, or slow-moving rivers to continue building your skills
- Check your state agency website for public fishing access maps.
- Target structure like docks, weed edges, and overhanging trees.
- Fish early morning or late evening when fish feed actively.
