If you are thinking about habitat work on your land, a free visit from a state biologist is the best first step. The NC Wildlife Resources Commission sends biologists to private land to walk the property with you, give recommendations and help you write a habitat improvement plan.
Many cost-share programs and the Wildlife Conservation Land Program tax deferment expect a written plan, so this visit also opens the door to funding.
Where to start
- Improve Your Land for Wildlife (NC Wildlife Resources Commission): request a biologist visit, plus guides on planning and land management methods.
- A Wild World of Opportunity (NC Wildlife Federation): a plain-language overview of federal, state and NCWF programs for landowners, including the Wildlife Conservation Land Program.
